How did the toad get over the sea to Skye? Tracing the colonisation of Scottish inshore islands by common toads (Bufo bufo)

چکیده

Processes of island colonisation have long been interest to biologists. Colonisation events themselves are rarely observed, but the processes involved may be inferred using genetic approaches. We investigated possible means by common toads (Bufo bufo) in western Scotland (the Isle Skye and five neighbouring small islands), evidence derived from nuclear microsatellites mitochondrial (mt) DNA. Levels microsatellite allelic richness for populations on were high comparable adjacent mainland populations, lower islands. Pairwise measures distances between a clustering algorithm both suggestive frequent gene flow mainland. For islands levels differentiation higher, implying stronger isolation no inbreeding. The distribution mtDNA haplotypes broadly mirrored structure revealed microsatellites. Reconciled with existing palaeoclimatological evidence, since last glaciation, our findings rule out possibility that B. bufo stem glacial refugia, or recent anthropogenic transfer is responsible their current distribution. most parsimonious explanation data studied inshore repeatedly colonised via rafting This give us insights into likely take place when ice sheets retreat poleward as result climate change. It also has implications native invasive non-native species, hence biosecurity refugia.

Dynamic Vision System: Modeling the Prey Recognition of Common Toads Bufo Bufo

The tectal structures underlying the prey-catching of toads are one of the best-known mechanisms in neurobiology. In our paper we present a simpliied model of the prey recognition of the common toad Bufo bufo.We show that the recognition performance can be explained by coupling two neuron layers that exhibit locally excitatory interaction while there is a topographic inhibition between the laye...

Phalangeal bone anomalies in the European common toad Bufo bufo from polluted environments

Every spring, many of amphibians are killed by motor vehicles on roads. These road-killed animals can be used as valuable material for non-invasive studies showing the effect of environmental pollution on amphibian populations. The aims of our research were to check whether the phalanges of road-killed toads may be useful as material for histological analysis, and whether various degrees of hum...

the present study is a survey os postmodern historical novel with respect to the voice of women. it argues how the recorded history is regulated by the rules of power and how women have been excluded from this discourse.ther study analysez angela carters nights at the circus as an example of postmodern historical novel to illustrate how this novel has questioned the historical narrative and how it has inserted women into history by breaking the rules of patriarchy.

the present thesis is a study of postmodern historical novel with respect to the voice of women. according to postmodern historiography, the established institution of history is one of the other manifestations of patriarchys power which has silenced women. the study analyzes angela carters nights at the circus as a postmodern historical novel which makes its female characters transgress the pat...
